As promulgated in Russia
it
was the idea that all Slavic peoples
should be united - under Russian he–
gemony, of course.
This would conveniently include
Yugoslavia - the Land of the South
Slavs. A noted Russian Pan-Slavist, Ni–
kolai Danilevski, in 1869 foresaw a fed–
eration of Slavic states ( led by Russia)
from east of the Elbe to the Adriatic
Sea. He was sorne 80 years ahead of his
time for it was not until 1948 that Josef
Stalin, who had revived the Pan-Slavic
idea in the dosing years of World War
II,
was able to bring Danievski's pre–
diction to pass. But it was short-lived.
That very same year, 1948, Tito and
Yugoslavia broke with the Soviet bloc.
