with the New Year.
Twenty-one ycars ago, on Janu–
ary 1, 1958, the Europcan Economic
Community was officially launched,

nental Europe's most important and
economica l ly a dvanced powers–
West Germany, France, ltaly and
the Benclux nations.
On another New Year's Day, this
time in 1973, the Community was
enlarged to nine member states with
the addition of Great Britain, lre–
Jand. aod Denmark.
