When 1 was a boy, our family
transportation was a horse and bug-

gy. Horse-drawn streetcars had just
been replaced. Telephones were rare,
hanging on walls. Only a few down–
town streets in cities were paved.
Automobiles were a curíosity- we
called them horseless carríages. They
were steered with a stick instead of a
steering wheel.
Gaslights dimly illuminated city
streets. A man, riding horseback,
rode past wíth a líghting stíck to turn
them on at dusk and again to turn
them off at dawn. Our home was
dimly lighted by kerosene lamps.
