Therefore WHEN you see the ‘abomination of desolation’, spoken of by Daniel the prophet STANDING in the HOLY PLACE” (whoever reads, let him understand) THEN let those who are in Judea FLEE to the mountains (Matthew 24:15-16).

Soon— A New Temple in Jerusalem?

Continued from December 4, 2009

Dear Brethren,

In this continued writing about the possibility of a new Temple being constructed in the near future to make possible the sacrificial offerings as prophesied by Daniel, there are a few areas to consider that was not mentioned in my last writing.

Why No Sacrificial Offerings Today

Titus and his Roman Armies conquered the Jews in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The armies burned the Temple to the ground. This is WHY the sacrificial offerings ceased being offered. And since there is no Temple; sacrifice was no longer possible.

The Temple Institute In Jerusalem Has Spent Approximately 27 Million Dollars On Preparations For The Rebuilding Of The Jewish Temple

We live at a time when the signs of the last days are literally being fulfilled right in front of our eyes.  One of the most exciting signs that Bible prophecy students love to keep an eye on are preparations for the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple.  In a previous article, we discussed how the Temple Institute in Jerusalem took a giant step towards the rebuilding of the Temple by beginning to rebuild the sacrificial altar.  Now it has been revealed that the Temple Institute has already spent approximately 27 million dollars on preparations for the rebuilding of the Temple, and that the Temple Institute intends for this future Temple to be a house of prayer for all "monotheistic religions".

The executive director of the Temple Institute, Yehuda Glick, says that a large portion of the financial support for the Temple Institute actually comes from evangelical Christians.....

''There are 70 million evangelical Christians around the world, and most of them have become Israel's strongest supporters.''

So what have all these funds gone towards so far?  Well, the truth is that the Temple Instituted has been extremely busy.  The Temple Institute Museum in Jerusalem's Old City contains solid gold service vessels, trumpets made of silver, garments to be worn by future priests made from golden thread, copper urns and many, many other items that have been painstakingly designed to Biblical specifications for use in the future Temple.”

A Third Temple by 2010?

On December 6, Haaretz reported the following:

"If the 18th-century rabbinic authority the Vilna Gaon was right, on March 16, 2010, construction will begin on the third Temple. His projection states that the auspicious day will coincide with the third completion of the Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalem's Jewish Quarter. The great day is at hand: On March 15, the reconstructed Hurva Synagogue, considered the most important house of prayer in Jerusalem will be rededicated. It was last destroyed in the War of Independence."

The Writings of Mr. Armstrong

When speaking or writing about the possibility of a new Temple to be built in this end-time, it is needful that we take into consideration the writings of Mr. Armstrong; what he wrote, and what he did not write about it.

Mystery of the Ages, Page 246, Mr. Armstrong

This Scripture (Ephesians 2:19-22) plainly reveals the temple to which the glorified Christ shall come at soon Second Coming. There is no scripture foretelling the construction of a material temple in Jerusalem before Christ’s appearing. The 40th chapter of Ezekiel, however, describes the building of a temple after the return of Christ.”

My observation: By reading carefully one can see from what Mr. Armstrong wrote here, that he does NOT say there won’t be a temple constructed, but rather there is NO Scripture such as Ezekiel or Haggai foretelling one.

By reading the following quotes from another of his writing, one can see that he is placing emphasis on the fact that Jesus Christ is NOT returning to a physical temple, but to a Spiritual Temple. And IF there is one built it will NOT be one to which Christ will return. In fact, it would be destroyed at His coming:

Correspondence Course # 3. Page 11 “Strong fascist resistance to Christ's presence will have been overcome. The fascist world's great religious leader and its great military leader will have been destroyed. Great numbers of the incorrigible wicked will have been killed. Huge hailstones and the world's greatest earthquake will have leveled human habitations.”

THE INCREDIBALE HUMAN POTENTIAL, Page 114, Mr. Armstrong

. . . Certainly the second temple, built by Zerubbabel, even though larger, could not compare in splendor to Solomon’s.

But God was speaking of the temple to which Christ shall come, at His glorious second coming as King of kings and Lord of Lords!

Jesus Christ came the first time still in the days of Old Covenant Israel— a carnal minded and rebellious people. It was a material temple, even as He came to a physical carnal people.

But He is coming the second time in supreme power and glory. He will come this time to a GLORIOUS TEMPLE – A SPIRITUAL TEMPLE, not a material temple. . . .

Note it. Christ is not coming to a material temple, but to His Church, then to be glorified with Him.”

After having read questions from the members on this Forum regarding what Mr. Armstrong had written about a physical temple not being built, and also reading the quotes about a Temple must be built from previous writings in the publications of the Church, Mr. Armstrong’s personal aide wrote the following about what Mr. Armstrong had come to think in the last few years of his life:

AARON DEAN <aaronkdean@msn.com> wrote:

HWA did change his view on how God could fulfill this. There were some orthodox Jews who visited him who were making instruments for temple service and wanted him to support building a temple. He didn't support them, and didn't know if they might be part of what might happen. It was an interesting discussion at his home.

He felt there probably would be sacrifices started, but didn't know if a temple would be built or just a section designated for a temple and sacrifices started without a temple completed. Also the possibility of it being spiritual desecration with the pope going to Jerusalem and perhaps taking the statue of Jupiter Olympus (the black Peter in the Vatican). Also the possibility of a duality in the church.  Just too many things to get a good handle on it. The early writings were in response to the Jews having gotten a home (Israel) after WWII.  Aaron”

PT, Aug., 1968, page 41, column 2, paragraph 4 GTA: "Bible prophecy specifically states that there WILL BE A TEMPLE IN JERUSALEM." Column 3, paragraph 3, GTA: "This reveals clearly. that the TEMPLE of which these prophecies speak must be a Temple IN JERUSALEM -- on the same site as the one in which Christ spoke; the same site on which Solomon's Temple had stood. This cannot be some other "temple" in some other area -- it must be a temple In Jerusalem -- or the prophecies of your Bible fail! ... He will SIT IN A TEMPLE OF GOD" -- ON THE TEMPLE SITE -- IN JERUSALEM!"

As to why I believe the Bible strongly indicates that a third Temple will be built, and that the Jews will begin to offer sacrifices in that Temple will be written in the next Pastor’s Comments.
