the

Surgical Hospital at
Qoang Tri, Vietnam.
"Yesterday," she said, "we had
quite a few mine accidents. lt's
really depressing, because of the
amputations." One GI had just
d.ied from an operation amputat–
ing both 1egs and an arm.
"lf 1 knew,"
she said,
"what
we are
fighting
for
-
if the
enemy did somethiog to our
country- 1 could see it. 1 DON'T
KNOWWHY WE'RE HERE! So
many Gis ask WHY.

can't
answer!
1 carne because 1 knew
they needed medica! help bere."
In the past week, 1 have
spoken before three audiences of
an aggregate of 3,500 people. 1
asked for a show of ñands of
those who had, during the past
four administrations at Washing–
ton, heard or read an EXPLA–
NATION of
WHY
the Un.ited
States is fighting the war in Viet–
nam - bow many had heard or
read the REASON
WHY
54,000
of our boys had sacrificed their
lives (44,500
battle
deaths) in a
war that has cost the U. S. more
than
125
billion dollars.
1 looked carefully over each
audience to estímate the number
that would hold up their hands.
And 1 looked and
looked-
but
1 could
NOT
see a single hand l
WHY has no Administration
in Washington, during the
Admin.istrations of Presidents
Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson
and Nixon, made the American
people UNDERSTAND?
DO NOT MISUNDER–
STAND! 1 do not mean to
say there is no reasoo. THERE

aod four Presideots, two
Democrats and two Republicaos,
have believed the war was so
necessary they have kept us in it.
But, aside from statemeots that
we must fulfill our commitments
to our allies - lead.ing many to
believe there is NO REASON
further than doing a friendly
service to sorne far-away race of
people we know little about- it
seems the people know ONLY
the Communist propaganda.
ATLAST- the Plain Truth About
WHY has
no U. S.
Government Administration in 11 years
made the people UNDERSTAND why the United States is in
the war
-
WHY there has
been no
purpose or plan to win
-
and WHY at last we are in process of getting
out?

o
give

to Saigon and talked with South Vietnamese people, high
government officials, American educators resident in Saigon,
