cutting

mature or deformed lrees. This allows growth
of young trees, perpeluoting a vigorous, healthy
forest. Giant machines capable of snipping an
18-inch tree at its base speed up modern log–
ging, though they domage the forest floor.
(Center top). logging truck (Upper right) hauls
logs lo mili for processing into lumber.
CLEAR CUTTING
huge oreas (lower left) yields
big profits immediotely. Yet this method of log–
ging opens up the eorth lo erosion by wind and
water. Wildlife habita! suffers, soil is destroyed,
and ecology of the orea is upset. logging debris
(center below) litters ground as a monument of
mon's wasle. The ultimate result of destructive
logging ond pollution (lower right) -
