needed her more, these past 9 years,
than while she lived - a lthough she
could never have undertaken this
new and present dimension of the
"great commission" that has de–
volved on me, for she cou ld never
have withstood the rigorous ordeal
of worldwide trave l
J
haveto endure
now. Nor could any other woman of
th at age. for that matter. And I
would never have 1efl her alone at
home, for 1 am now away about
th ree fou rths of the time.
But back to sorne important facts
brought to light in this new book.
Another trend - the experts agree -
is that the divorce rate of people
from 45 to 60 is rising rapid1y.
And this is one factor that is con–
tributing toward a new and growing
TRAGEDY in the United States, and
undoubtedly, in many other coun–
tries.
This growing TRAG EDY is the fact
that 11
if2
million peop1e over age 55
are living ALONE, widows, widowers,
and the divorced - plus a compara–
tive few who never married.
T~ll S
lS APPROXlMATE LY ONE
THIRD OF THE ENTIRE U.S. POPU–
LATION ABOYE 55!
ln March 1971 , there were in th e
U. S. approximately 11 ,000,000 mar–
ri ed couples, or approximate ly 22
million people above age 55 who
we re married. But approxima tely
11 lh million people above 55 were
single and ALONE. Of these, for
eve ry single man, there were FOUR
single women above age 55 living
a lone.
When God said, " lt is NOT GOOD
that the man should be a1one,"
woman had not yet been created.
lt
was for that ve ry reason - that it
was NOT good that one should be
alone - tha t God created WOMAN.
lf it is not good tha t a man should
be alone, the same applies to a
woman.
The enormity of this growing
tragedy becomes all the more ap–
parent wben we consider that this is
a GROWING condition. Dr. Peter–
son's book states tha t in the U.S.
42
wit hin two dccades HALF the total
U.S. population will be over 50
years o ld .
For this ve ry reason, he says. it is
very importan! that the myths abou t
"old age" be exposed and eradi–
cated from the po pular mind .
Thcse, he says, are myths thal a re
DESTROYING lhe Jives of peopJe
above 55.
The Peterson and Payne book
gives a breakdown on the single per–
sons left ALONE past age 55 , as of
March 1971. There were approxi–
mately 8,300,000 widows, 1,700,000
widower s and approximatel y
1,000,000 single women who had
been divorced and a half million
single men because of divo rce. This
total s the tr agic number of
JI ,500,000 people over 55 who are
single and mostly li ving ALONE -
slightly more than half as many as
were married.
The book points out that every
human being - maJe and female
alike - NEEDS love and affeclion.
And this applies to infants in their
first year who
need
and thrive on
affection and love ex pressed by par–
en ts. Growing children NEED not
only companionsh ip and guidance
(yes, and discipline exercised with
wisdom) but also !ove and affection
from parents. No one questions the
need for romance sure to be sought
by or before the early and mid -20s.
Companionship, with the expression
of affection and !ove, is necessary,
even as an emotional and spiritual
FOOD, throughoul marriage -
whi c h , tDEALLY , s ho uld Jast
th roughout Ji fe, regardl ess of
age.
The "GREAT MYTH" as 1 would
phrase what is lhe great concern ex–
pressed by Drs. Peterson and Payne
in
Love in the Later Years
is the
supposition assumed generally tha l
romance, !ove, and affection are ap–
propriate and even needed in the
20s, but by middle age or after
it
is
rid iculous - tha l by middle age
people are not supposed 10 rela in
energy, vigor, and acli ve-minded ac–
compli shme nt. Companionship,
!ove, and affection are the very
FOOD for an energetic and dynamic
success built lhrough the 20s, 30s,
and 40s, and perhaps even into lhe
ea rly 50s, bul after lhal people are
supposed to become seni le, sexually
indifferenl. impotent, frigid. and
comple lely useless. They are sup–
posed to retire and sink into helpless
uselessness.
It
is prccisely because so many,
going lhroug h 1he 20s lo a nd
th rough lhe 50 ,
think
thal is what
they are SUPPOSED lO do that they
bog down and live up to the enslav–
ing MYTH!
People seem lo assume lha t afler
the 50s the human mind is supposed
to decay. Perhaps sorne few, accept–
ing the myth, have bogged down
and grown senile. That is a tragedy.
lt
happens only to the mind tha t has
not been USED. A mind IMPROVES
with use and age. Wisdom comes
with expcrience and AGE.
In my personal experience - and
why
shouldn
't
1 sharc the benefit of
that ex perience and knowledge with
my millions of readers - 1 have pro–
duced my grea test accomp lishment
since 1 hit the calenda r age of 80. Of
course that's not my
actual
age -
only what the ca lenda r says. The
mos t importan! KNOWLEDGE has
been learned since then. I speak
today with more vigor, effectiveness,
and power than in my 40s.
Y
es, as a ma n THINKS in his heart,
so is he.
More power lo Drs. Peterson and
Payne, and to other researchers. in
their efforts to abolish the Satanic
MYTH!
