iticlans, milltary leaders, and
statesmen increasingly are
borrowmg terms from the pages of
the Bible in order to describe cur–
ren! world conditions?
M1l1tary spokesmen talk about
"the handwntmg on the wall" and
use such words and ph rases as
"apocalyptlc," "our Armageddon,"
"the tour horsemen of the apoca–
lypse," " bemg weighed in the bal–
ance,' ' and sim i lar biblica l
termmology.
A whole new group of scientists
are be1ng called the "Jeremiahs. ··
They deliver statements labeled
'·Jeremlads" in which they descnbe
a w1de-rangmg compend1um of
man-caused cnses - the popu–
lation explosion. the global ecolog–
lcal breakdown, and the
prollferat1on of nuclear weapons
technology.
All of th1s goes to show that the
B1ble is
relevan!
to ou r nuclear
space age where the potential for

human ann1hilat1on is a hornble
reality.
A cred1ble. rel1able bas1s 1s
needed now. more than ever be–
fare, to properly assess and ap–
pralse the complexity of the
mult1faceted problems plagu1ng so–
ciety in th1s rapid-paced, topsy–
turvy world of ours. The Old and
New Testament documents of the
Bible, believe it or not, comprise that
standard. Jesus Christ of Nazareth–
the central figure
1n
the bibllcal reve–
lallon - was very concerned with ·
future world happenings. So much
so that he foretold, m advance, the
chaot1c cond1t1ons that currently en–
velop the earth. In additlon, he gave
his future d1sc1ples m all ages some
very sage advice.
He sa1d:
··watch ye therefore,
and
pray always, that ye may be ac–
counted worthy to escape all these
things that shall cometo pass, and to
stand before the Son of man" (Luke
21 :36).

what was happening.
Jesus told h1s generatlon. as well
as ours, to be aware of 1mpend1ng
national destruction- which

them nearly 40 years later. He
knew that the destruct1on of the sec–
ond Temple was JUSI around the
cerner. And true to his words, JUSI a
few decades later. the Romans lm–
paled thousands

Judea. many died
by sword, spear, and bludgeon;
others had to flee for the1r lives; some
wound up 1n a harsh captiv1ty.
The news is much more than a
five-minute glance at the mornmg
newspaper over your second cup of
coffee. You have lo take time to s1t
down and senously consider the
nat1onal and global sígn1f1cance of
curren! events. In an age of 1ncred-
1ble publlc mattentlon and outnght
apathy - paradoxically at a t1me
when news and mformat1on travels
at the speed of light - the follow1ng
