M
! first visit to South Africa
" ·as some )Car. overdue.
1
had expectcd. from repon
printcd about South Africa and
apurtlieid.
to find whites arrogantly
dominant and blacks cowcring in
fear.
But 1 found instead - on the sur–
facc - apparent racial peace. 1
found blacks holding their heads up
ju t like whitcs. 1 found both blacks
and \\'hites. for instance. in the ho–
tcl's large coO'cc shop in cqual
numbers. each going abou t their re–
spective jobs just as if thcy were all
the same race.
Th en. suddenly. thc day before
yc tcrday. 1 arrived back in Johan–
ne. burg from a visit to South-West
Africa and found in the evening
ncwspaper the full-pagc-wide head–
line, "SIX DIE I RIOTS." That
was Wednesday, Junc 16. The
mo rning paper
Of
Thur day, June

of two words.
''Fiaming Night."
Un–
der it was a seven-column. full-color
picture of motor trucks in flame.
All had seemed to be at

here- on the surface. South Africa
is trying the experiment of
TWO
raccs. black and white. and also a
third. called here ·•coloured" - a
mixture of 1ndian. mulatto. and
other races - each by law li ving in
its one area of the city or cou ntry.
and each of the threc forbidden by
law to live in any other than its own
arca.
Supposedly they are all equal , ye t
obv iously the whi tes domínate. Sup–
poscdly there is no discriminalion.
Supposedly all are friends. no one
race supposedly fecling superior.
and no other feeling inferi or.
Supposcdly, that is the case. And.
on the surface. tha t is thc way il
appcarcd when 1 arrivcd over threc
wccks ago. Here in my hotel, lhe
Carlton, blacks are we lcome the
same as whites. b'ut 1 ha ve sccn a l–
mos t no blacks as gucst:,. although
thc number of black and whi te em–
ployees appear lo be about equal.
1 havc no doubl lhal lhis arca–
