l
ajor news headlines this
morning read: Another gov–
emment overthrown - this
time in Peru, and a new pre–
mier and government in riot-tom
Portugal.
Governn¡ents are being over–
thrown at the rate of one or more a
month.
This
morning banner head-,
li.oes report a bloodless coup over–
throwing Presiden! Juan Velasco
Alvarado of Peru. lt was a coup by
left-wing
military
officers. These
same officers bad staged a previous
coup in October 1968, overthrowing
the govemment of President Fern–
ando Belaunde Terry. Apparently
the left-wingers felt that President
Alvarado was not making fast
~nough
progress toward commu–
nism. General Francisco· Morales
Bermúdez has now taken over
·as
bead of state. He has been prime
minister since the 1968 govemmenl
was overlhrown.
lo riot-torn Portugal, thal country
has been on the verge of civil war for
weeks. Portugal is predomioantly
Roman Catholic, bul communists
have been makíng inroads, just as
they have to a greater or lesser de–
gree all over the world. The new
premier replaces the communists; be
__....-is to form a oew govemment. Appar–
ently this does nQt end the strife
in
-. -.__Portugal, and we sball probably hear
of more govemmenl changes or civil
war.
lncidentally, this communist–
rigbtist struggle
in
Portugal could
possibly trigger the propbesied
Uniled States of Europe if forces at
Rome feel that the time is rigbt.
That's certainly an OUlSide possi-
bility.

Tbe former Emperor Halle Se–
lassie of
~thiopia
died a few days
ago. He was just eight days older
than
l.
His govemment was· over:
thrown by a military coup approx.í–
mately a year ago. One of the las1
things he did before the military
took bim was to send me a letter of
congratulation on my 82nd birthday,
Many asked me after his imprisoo–
menl whal had happened to the
noted emperor. Bul 1 didn't know.
Nobody except a few military offi–
cers in Ethiopia knew.

he and Haile Selassie were very
close friends - closer than brothers,
he said. But at lhat time be had no

of a day or two before Henry Kiss–

aboul an interim peace accord be–
tween Israel and Egypt. The peace
there will not last. Jerusalem is des–

Last
evening 1 was a guest of
honor at a dinner pany at the resi–
dence of lhe lsraeli ambassador to
Japan. Eighteen were present. in–
cluding the ambassador and his
wife, wbo was a gracious hostess; a
former lsra-eli ambassador to an Af–
rican nation; and some of my "Japa–
nese sons," members ofthe Japanese
Diet. Nine of the 18. bad also been
present al an outstanding banquet
hosted by the Japanese embassy in
Jerusillem just four weeks ago.
.
Sorne of my "Japanese sons" were
aJso
there, along with a few Japa.nese
archaeologists working on the Japa–
nese archaeological project at Tel
Zeror, between Tel Aviv and Haifa.
Al that banquet were the largest
number of lsraeli leaders that have
been present at any sucb atfair in
sorne time. 1 am personally grateful
that 1 bave been in a position to
bring about a warm and peaceful
relationship between many Jeaders
in Japan and Israel, and also be–
tween Japan and Egypt, bul it will
1ake a greater
POWER
than human to
bring
PEJ!.MANENT PEACE
between
Israel and the Arab world. Yet that
PERMANENT PEACE
will come
IN OUR
TIME.
You can reád of it in the book
