did Britons react to the recent Conservative
victory ?
The Brítish stock market made the largest
one-day leap on record - a rise of $3.6 billion
immediately followíng the announcement that the
Conservatives were back in power.
Six years of
Lttbour
Government had convinced
a majority of Britons that the
Conservatives
weren't so
bad after all.
A Surprise T ory Victory
British pollsters and política! pundits bad gen–
erally agreed the Labour Government would win by
a comfortable marg in. But in spite of these pro-Labour
prognostications, Mr. Wilson's Labour Government
was thrust out of office. The Tories gained 75 seats,
and now have a padiamentary majority of 30.
A recent
improz,ement
in Brítaio's balance-of–
payments position, plus a rasb of
pay increases
and
a comfortable lead, according to tbe polls, over the
Conservatives, had convinced Prime Minister Wílson
it was time to call an election. Presumably Mr.
Wilson feared the Labour Government's popularity
rating might again slip below tbat of the Con–
servatives if he waited much longer.
So, Mr. Wilson called a general e!ection.
But he and his Labour Party were rude!y
