TRUTH, Arthur A. Ferdig, handed me a copy of a
book chat had exerted influence on my life as a young
man many years ago - probably about 1910.
le was one of those " inspiration books "
designed ro inspire young men with ambicion, desire
to succeed, and confidence. This particular book was
titled
He Can Who Thinks He Can.
lt was one of
many such inspirational or "success" books authored
by Orison Swett Marden.
Ir had occurred ro me, about eighr or ten years ago, thar we
oughr to have thar book in che Ambassador College library. As
J
remember, our library staff found that che book was our of print,
and they searched che second-hand book stores until they found a
copy.
Seeing a copy of ir broughr back memories.
le
seems chat
eirher rhere is no demand for such books roday, or rhere are no
authors wirh che inspiracion and ability co wrice chem. 1 am sure
chat chis particular book concribured irs porrion of ambician,
inspiration, confidence. Yet, reviewing ir now, afrer more than 60
years, brings che reaJizarion thar in all rhose years I have learned a
few rhings 1 didn't know then.
The book has no preface - no introduction. Ir begins with
Chapter
1: "
'l promised
my
God l would
tú;
it.'
In Sepcember,
1862,
when Lmcoln issued che preliminary emancipacion proclamarion,
che sublime acc of che nineteench cencury, he madc chis enrry in
his diary - '1 promised my God I would do it.' Does any onc
doubt chat such a mighty resolucion added power ro chis mar–
velous man;
oc
thar ir nerved him ro accomplish whar he had
underraken ?
