voices which affirm that it in fact

which tout the equal status of
thcir women . Numerous sociolo–
gists and historians have tall ied
the surprising results of the liber–
ation of women in Socialist coun–
tries.
Amaury de Reincourt says of
the Soviet Russian experimcnt:
"Lenin at first lost no time in
launching the legal emancipation
of Russian women by striking
down the major bulwark of civ–
ilized 'bourgeois' life: the family,
the one sociobiological entity that
could stand as a protective shicld
betwcen the individual and thc
all-destroying revolutionary
state.... Starting in
1920,
abor–
tions were allowed without any
restrictions wbatsoever ... and
the legal emancipation of women
was bolstered by their economic
liberation when they were put to
work outside the home.
"And as early as 1919, Soviet
authorities decreed 'the family
has ceased to be a necessity both
to its members and for the
statc'....
"Aithough the topic of free
love repelled Lenin personally,
his political designs compclled
him to go along with the move–
ment, insofar as it was the quick–
est and easiest way to dcstroy in
depth the old society which he
abhorred.
" 1
n a few short years the grcat
expcriment began to fall apart ...
and far from raising the status of
woman, the revolution proved to
be utterly demoralizing. Rathcr
than freeing woman, it had frecd
man
from sexual restraints and
domcstic responsibility"
(Sex
and Power in History,
pp.374-
375).
The Soviet government saw the
results of its policies of free !ove,
the family disintegration, the dis–
regard for any authority except
the State- namely mushrooming
juvenile delinquency, the lower–
ing of female life expectancy
by
six years
and the drop in female
economic productivity. The "old"
38
laws were repealcd. New ones
instated which supported family
solidarity. To quote again from
author Reincourt:
"The stage was set for a full–
fledged restoration of the old fam–
ily virtues and even Lenin's well–
known dislike for promiscuity was
invoked. Premarital chastity and
conjuga! fidelity wcre openly
praised; marriage breakers and
promiscuous men wcrc likely to be
expelled from the party and have
their careers ruined.
"All experiments with the rais–
ing of children in state institu–
tions were declared failures"
(Jbid,
pp. 377-378).
In 1943 Soviet authorities
abol ished coeducation on the jus–
tification that boys must be pre–
pared for servicc in the army,
while girls are essentially moth–
ers. Wartime circumstances and
Russian fear of the declining
birthrate impelled further legisla–
tion and government grants to
encourage large families and
strengthen the bonds of the fami–
ly.
"From then on, laws were
passed, altered or repealed with–
out taking too much into account
the specific welfare of women;
only the welfare of the Soviet
Union carne into consideration"
(Reincourt. p. 379).
The story of the People's Re–
public of China is essentially the
same: /\bolition of family ties,
abortion and free-love policies
carne to a halt when authorities
realized it was harming thc goals
of thc totalitarian state and eco–
nomic productivity.
So feminists in this country are
pressuring the goals which proved
devastating in these Socialist so–
cieties- dcvastating not only to
the totalitarian aims of thc State
but also to the status of women.
Unlikc one party states, thc
democratic process takes much
longer to implement policies and
even longer to undo them. lf the
revolutionary goals of feminists
are ever realized in this country,
complete disintcgration of civi–
lized socicty is almost certainly to
be thc outcome- if we can be-
