warm summer's
morning a man child
was born in the
ghetto. As his lonely
mother considered their fu–
ture , she cried. Thirteen
years later, on a cold winter's
night in the streets of the
ghetto, this man child was
killed in a gang shoot-out,
and bis mother cried.
This genocidal cycle of life and
death happens thousands of times
each year in u rban ghettos.

working in America's Jargest urban
city, New York, 1 see and deal
with the effects of the breakdown
of the family every day. 1 see a
whole class of people destroying
themselves. This is not just a black–
ghetto problem, it is affecting ev–
ery sector of our society-it is a
national crisis and is spreading to
all the world's urban areas.

are not criminals or poor. Many
blacks are responsible, suocessful
people with stable families. Sorne
are middle class and úpper-middle
class and highly educated. But the
problem hits blacks of the ghetto
the hardest, and that is where we
must be most concerned .
