God lost control?
People do have eyes
t o see. Obviou sly
something is wrong.
No corner of the earth has es–
caped the terrors of the 20th cen–
tury. Tbe Third World continues
to suffer from traditional killers
like famine, starvation, disease
epidemics. Witness Ethiopia and
other areas of Black Africa. Six
African countries are on the 1986
famine danger list.
And don't forget those areas of
the earth where human beings
are enslaved by autocratic poli ti–
cal systems. The natural free–
doms and dignity of men- taken
for granted in the Anglo-Saxon
world-are continual ly denied by
many d ictatorial governments.
Someone to Blame?
Wherever we look the media
blares out tbe agony of modero
civilization. lnnocent travelers in
Rome and Vienna suffer and die
at the hands of terrorists. An
American military plane crashes
in Canada. lts ret urning 248
young Sinai peacekeepers perish
in the flames.
"You don ' t know whom to
blame," declares a surviving rela–
tive. Amid all the tears people
ask- "Why?"
Sooner or later someone brings
God into the picture.
If
he is
all-powerful , why didn't he inter–
vene and prevent these terrible
tragedies?
Forgetting the Canadian crash
for the moment, consider the po–
tential causes for any air acci–
dent. Is God to blame for pilot
error? Is he responsible when air–
lines scrimp on maintenance? l s
he culpable when obsolescent air–
craft are in service? Is he to be
blamed for metal fatigue?
Nonetheless, wby doesn't God
step in and use bis powers to
make up for man's errors? Why
this hands-off policy?
Why doesn' t God do some–
thing?
