in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem:
12
And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom
Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the L
ORD
shall give thee of this young woman.
13
So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the L
ORD
gave her
conception, and she bare a son.
14
And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed
be
the L
ORD
, which
hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
15
And he
shall be unto thee a restorer of
thy
life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law,
which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
16
And Naomi took the
child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
17
And the women her neighbours gave
it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he
is
the father of
Jesse, the father of David.
18
Now these
are
the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,
19
And Hezron begat Ram,
and Ram begat Amminadab,
20
And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
21
And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
22
And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.

CHAPTER SAMUEL 1
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah,
the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
2
And he had
two wives; the name of the one
was
Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah
had children, but Hannah had no children.
3
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship
and to sacrifice unto the L
ORD
of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas,
the priests of the L
ORD
,
were
there.
4
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons
and her daughters, portions:
5
But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but
the L
ORD
had shut up her womb.
6
And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret,
because the L
ORD
had shut up her womb.
7
And
as
he did so year by year, when she went up to the
house of the L
ORD
, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
8
Then said Elkanah
her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart
grieved?
am
not I better to thee than ten sons?
9
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest
sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the L
ORD
.
10
And she
was
in bitterness of soul, and prayed
